Patent Agent

The Patent Agent will be responsible for drafting and prosecution of patent applications in alignment with the IP strategy to protect the results of Coloplast innovation and increase our competitive advantage.
The role involves identification of inventions, drafting and prosecution of patent applications, assessing competitor patents and patent applications, mitigation of patent risk, representing Coloplast in appeals to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and advising on patent related matters in transactions and disputes.
The role requires specialist knowledge in technology and law, independent decision making and close collaboration with other parts of Group IP, Innovation, including R&D, Clinical and Regulatory, Business Development and Pipeline, Patent Offices and external patent attorneys.
The Patent Agent will be part of the US patent team of Group IP, which is responsible for handling IP related issues globally in all Coloplast business areas.
Therefore, the Patent Agent will potentially handle patent related issues globally for all Coloplast business units, but focus will be on issues relating to the USA and the Wound and Tissue Repair business area of the Acute Care business unit.
The Patent Agent will work independently on the tasks and have independent responsibility for the areas assigned but work in close collaboration with others parts of Group IP.
Major Areas of Accountability
- Drafting and prosecution of US patent (utility and design) applications (for all Coloplast business units, but with a focus on the Acute Care business unit)
- Assessing invention disclosures (in the Acute Care business unit)
- Assessing competitor patents and patent applications (for all Coloplast business units, but with a focus on the Acute Care business unit)
- Advocating for Coloplast in interviews with Examiners and in front of the PTAB (for all Coloplast business units)
- Advising management on patent related matters (in Acute Care business unit)
- Coloplast employees are required to conduct business to the highest ethical and professional standards; comply with applicable laws and regulations, the Advamed Code of Ethics on Interactions with Healthcare Professionals, and company policies.
- Create an overview of Wound and Tissue Repair patent position and take over prosecution of Kerecis patent portfolio
- Build a strong relation to Wound and Tissue Repair stakeholders and external patent attorneys
- Support implementation of Coloplast IP procedures in Wound and Tissue Repair
- Other areas as assigned
Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of patent prosecution experience from private practice or industry
- Registered patent agent (non-attorney role)
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in chemistry/bio science
- Experience from the medical device industry or relevant technologies
Required knowledge, skills & abilities
- Strong writing and communication skills (English)
- Ability to manage many different matters and deadlines
- Access and familiarity with Patent Center
- Technology & AI literacy

- Competitive Compensation: The compensation range for this position is $142,000 - $212,000. Actual compensation is influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to skills, experience, qualifications, and geographic location. Hired candidates may be eligible to receive additional compensation in the form of bonuses and/or incentives.
