Principal Simulation Engineer - influence our final product design

Humlebæk, DK

Job Family:  Research & Development
Country/Region:  Denmark

Would you like to play a key role in improving the understanding of our products and improve their design while using state-of-the-art simulation tools to do so?

And do you want to help define the strategy for simulation and how it plays into our development projects across all Coloplast products?

“Further building this simulation capacity in the organisation, your work will have a direct influence on the final product, making a difference for people with intimate health care needs worldwide,” says Jens Sparre Kobbernagel, Head of Mechanical Engineering.

Work with an array of colleagues across Product Design & Engineering
The new Coloplast products are designed by Product Design & Engineering – a versatile group of colleagues working in 4 teams: Design & Usability Engineering, Adhesive Engineering, Material Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

You will join Mechanical Engineering and the Simulation team alongside 2 engineers to provide development projects with guidance and recommendations via simulations.

“It’s essential for us that we can collaborate across professions in these projects. And that’s why we have a culture where there’s room to speak up, and where your colleagues will be open to your input,” explains Jens.

Let your findings guide the product design
Collaborating with your 2 colleagues and management in Mechanical Engineering, you will help develop the strategy intended to expand our simulation capabilities in development projects. Here, you will be the subject matter expert and play a key role in implementing the strategy.

Moreover, you and your teammates will support 1-2 development projects at a time, working closely with mechanical design engineers. Sometimes they will provide you with designs to assess and optimise, but in other cases, we build the model proactively to understand the behavior of our products better.

Overall, your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Provide both simple and advanced FE analysis to various development projects
  • Present fact-based design recommendations to the development projects based on your findings
  • Be a part of further developing the internal processes in the Simulations and Mechanical team
  • Be a part of building our material library
  • Coach team members within simulation and best practice

We use a practical approach to the engineering situations we are presented with. Sometimes that means using simple linear models to optimise and make recommendations on design direction. Sometimes it means modelling the complex non-linear behavior of biological tissue or the fracture propagation in the product.

Experience with non-linear FE analysis and building simulation capabilities
We produce products in the millions, so as a person, you need to pay great and early attention to detail, as it can have great business impact. You are also able to communicate your findings clearly and guide and inspire the team as well as collaborate with colleagues across disciplines.

Finally, we imagine that you:

  • Most likely have a background in consultancy, food, medico, pharma, automotive or the wind industry
  • Have several years of industry experience with non-linear FE analysis in one of the major commercial softwares
  • Hold an MSc/PhD with specialty in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering or similar
  • Have extensive experience with non-linear FE analysis of polymers (e.g. large deflections, non-linear materials and contacts)
  • Have experience in building simulation capabilities in an R&D organisation
  • Are fluent in English

If you would like to know more about the position, please contact Jens Sparre Kobbernagel, Head of Mechanical Engineering, on We will take candidates into the recruitment process continuously, so do not hesitate to apply. This position will remain open until a suitable candidate has been found.
