Manager, Software and Security Engineering

The Manager, Software and Security Engineering leads the software, firmware, mobile, and cybersecurity engineers responsible for active implantable medical devices. This role provides technical leadership, people leadership, and execution oversight for embedded firmware, software, cybersecurity and DevOps, ensuring software quality throughout software lifecycle management. The position combines strategic leadership, talent development, and hands-on technical guidance to deliver safe, secure, reliable, and compliant products.
Major Areas of Accountability
- Lead, mentor, recruit, retain, and develop a high-performing engineering team while fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence.
- Provide strategic and technical leadership for software architecture, embedded firmware, mobile applications, cybersecurity, verification, and sustaining engineering activities.
- Drive development of mobile applications and support connected medical device ecosystems, including Bluetooth-enabled solutions where applicable.
- Champion requirements development, requirements traceability, software architecture, and design documentation practices.
- Oversee secure software development lifecycle activities, threat modeling, vulnerability management, cybersecurity risk assessments, and secure coding practices.
- Lead adoption of Agile methodologies, DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, peer code reviews, and configuration management processes.
- Develop, maintain, and continuously improve SOPs, work instructions, engineering standards, and software best practices.
- Drive project planning, resource planning, staffing, forecasting, budgeting support, and execution against schedule and business objectives.
- Ensure compliance with IEC 62304, ISO 14971, FDA design controls, cybersecurity guidance, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Partner closely with Quality, Regulatory, Clinical, Manufacturing, and Product Development teams.
- Present technical updates, risks, strategic recommendations, and development status to senior leadership and stakeholders.
- Support products from concept through verification, validation, transfer to manufacturing, commercialization, and post-market support.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field.
- 8+ years of software engineering experience.
- 1-3 years of people leadership experience.
- Experience in medical devices, Active Implantable preferred.
- Experience leading complex software development projects and cross-functional teams.
Technical Skills
- Knowledge of C, C++, Python, Java, and Kotlin.
- Embedded software and firmware development experience.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity, threat modeling, vulnerability management, secure coding, and product security.
- Strong understanding of Agile methods, DevOps, CI/CD, automated testing, code reviews, and configuration management.
- Experience writing software requirements and maintaining end-to-end traceability.
- Experience with mobile application development, test automation, and software verification.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and software lifecycle processes.
- Excellent communication, leadership, collaboration, and organizational skills.

- Competitive Compensation: The compensation range for this position is $116,734 - $175,101. Actual compensation is influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to skills, experience, qualifications, and geographic location. Hired candidates may be eligible to receive additional compensation in the form of bonuses and/or incentives.
